Benedek Csalog (Hungary) is one of Europe’s leading and internationally acclaimed baroque flautists. A Hungarian-born musician, he graduated from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where he studied under Barthold Kuijken. He has won first prizes at major early music competitions, including Musica Antiqua Bruges (Belgium) and the National Flute Association’s ‘Baroque Flute Artist Competition’ in Orlando, Florida.

In 2017, he launched the Quantz Project, a long-term recording initiative dedicated to the complete flute oeuvre of Johann Joachim Quantz, comprising approximately 600 compositions. In 2023, Brilliant Classics began releasing a significant portion of this repertoire—including around 200 sonatas—on CD and digital platforms. The first two volumes (a single CD and a double CD) have already been released, with the next double-CD album (Volume 3) due out soon. Approximately twelve more double albums are expected over the next two years.

Csalog has performed as a soloist across much of Europe and appeared at major festivals, including the Holland Festival, the Festival of Flanders, Musicora Paris, the Festival d’Avignon, the Stockholm Early Music Festival, the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, Festival Radovljica, and the St. Petersburg Early Music Festival. He made his US debut in Chicago performing Quantz’s Concerto in G major; later, he was invited to Boston for several performances of J.S. Bach’s Musical Offering alongside American musicians. He has also performed in New York. Until 2022, he performed regularly as a soloist in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Over the years, he has collaborated with some of the most iconic figures in the world of early music, including William Christie, Sigiswald Kuijken, Emma Kirkby, and Barthold Kuijken.

In Hungary, he has frequently performed as a soloist at the Sopron Early Music Days, the Budapest Spring Festival, the Veszprém Early Music Festival, and the Budapest Bach Week.

His discography encompasses repertoire for solo flute, chamber music, orchestra, and oratorio. In addition to numerous chamber music recordings, he has frequently recorded as a member of prominent German Baroque ensembles. As a member of Concerto Armonico, he participated in the recording of C.P.E. Bach’s complete harpsichord concertos for the BIS label. His performances and recordings are regularly broadcast by Hungarian radio and by radio stations in other countries.

Alongside his career as a soloist, Benedek is also a passionate and enthusiastic teacher.
He has given masterclasses in Germany, Portugal, Japan, the United States, Brazil, Slovakia, Poland, Serbia, Croatia, Belarus, and the Netherlands, as well as in Budapest and other Hungarian cities. Furthermore, he has served as the artistic director of various summer academies in Hungary.
